INSO DEMANDS SOLUTION OF BDS STUDENTS PROBLEMS, VC ASSURES EARLY ACTION

Indian National Students Organisation
Press Release

Chandigarh, September 1: Students of Dental Institute, Panjab University led by Indian National Students organisation's (INSO) Chairman, Sukhdev Kundu protested today against the various problems like insufficient number of teaching faculty and fine of Rs 1000 on all the BDS students etc. Later INSO delegation also called on PU Vice Chancellor to submit the demands memorandum.
VC assured the INSO delegation that the process of recruitment of Professors, Readers, Lecturers would be initiated soon. Prof Sobti also assured the delegation that there demands would be duly considered.
INSO chairman, Sukhdev Kundu said that there was urgent requirement to recruit adequate number of Professors, Readers, Lecturers and non-teaching staff. As per the Dental College of India regulations, minimum staffing pattern for under graduate dental studies in 3rd year is 6 Professors, 13 Readers and 40 Lecturers, where as there is no Professor in the Dental Institute, he added. The number of Readers and Lecturers is also highly inadequate as only 5 Readers and 30 Lecturers are there in the institute.
This gross inadequacy of teaching faculty should be rectified at the earliest so as the students did not suffer from insufficient teaching staff, Sukhdev Kundu further added. DCI has power to derecognise the recognition, if the institute does not follow its directions and regulations, so the PU administration should give urgent attention to the issue.
INSO activists protested against the highly objectionable decision of fining Rs 1,000 on all the students for an alleged incident of ragging. It is totally unjustified and against the natural justice that all students are made to pay for the folly of one student, if any. In this, all the students cannot be fined for mistake of one person, INSO PU president, Deepak Hooda said.
Students said that there was acute parking problem in Dental Institute as whenever the rains come; the parking spot is flooded with mud and water. INSO leaders also highlighted the canteen problem in Dental Institute as well, as it was placed at the far end of the University. Students also demanded solution of other problems like lack of adequate Laboratory facilities, Library Books and separate hostel for boys and girls in sector 25.
INSO leaders said that PU should also make arrangements to highlight the Dental Institute as more publicity would get more patients and more practical exposure.
