Chandigarh, 31 August: In a unique initiative, Girl students of PU have formed a distinctive platform ‘Panjab University Women Front (PUWF)” to fight for the girls cause. This was announced by PU INSO campus president Deepika Thakur at a press conference at PU students centre on Monday.
“Arise, awake & stop not till goal is reached” will be the PUWF slogan, Deepika said. It is just a humble beginning, we will show our strength in November, she said while referring to scores of girls’ representatives present on the occasion, she added. PUWF logo was also released on the occasion.
Deepika called upon all the students organisations to follow the example set by INSO and give real responsibilities to the girls. “Why girls should be restrained to the post of Vice President, important posts like President & General Secretary should be offered to the girls”, she added. INSO has set up an example in women empowerment when a girl has been chosen to lead the organisation and made its PU campus president, she further added.
Girls should not be used as a rubber stamp to garner the girl’s votes but they should be part of all decision making, Deepika said. Girls can understand the students’ problems and girl leadership is the need of the hour, PUWF leader further added.
Deepika Thakur said that PUWF will be a non-political front of all girls irrespective of their political affiliations and leanings. She said that all girls of PU having a fire and spirit for taking up girls cause will be involved in the PUWF. She thanked INSO for providing such a non-political platform to the girl students of PU. She said that PUWF will consist of representatives from all girls’ hostels & day scholar girls of the PU whose primary task would be to highlight problems faced by girls in the university.
We have been working on modalities for the last one month and we have been able to formulate a team that has representatives of all sections/departments of students, Deepika added. PUWF units will also be opened in all the colleges, educational institutions of Chandigarh, she further added. I have already got calls from different colleges for the women front & Girls are very excited about it, said Deepika.
Deepika said that PUWF will work as a medium between authorities and the girls. There is a lack of communication between girls and the authorities, and in many cases, the girls are not able to approach the university authorities due to lack of any suitable platform, she added.
Girls have great power and PUWF will work for making all the girls realize their huge strength so that they do not have to go to others to protect hem selves or solving their problems, Deepika said. PUWF would directly take up the girls problems with the authorities, she added.
